ABSTRACT:
The paper describes methods that are available for optimal design and analysis of geotechnical
engineering problems. An overview of the different application areas has been presented giving a brief account of the available literature on the subject highlighting the studies undertaken by the author and his students. Two typical example problems have been presented to demonstrate successful application of non-linear programming techniques in solving such problems. Finally, general observation has been made with regard to the scope and development of these methods.
